HipCal Development Blog

What’s happening?
We’ve been acquired by Plaxo, the leader in smart address books.

About two months ago we were contacted by the folks over at Plaxo. They were interested in what we’d done with HipCal and wanted to explore the possibility of joining forces. Sweet. So a few days later we were on our way out to Mountain View, California (a pleasant break from Troy, NY in the middle of February). While talking with Plaxo’s team we realized that we had a similar vision for what a calendar should be. Plaxo has millions of users, sync technology, and awesome employees…we couldn’t wait to bring our creative calendar expertise to the table. (toot toot, that was our own horn)

So what does that mean for us loyal, awesome HipCal users?
HipCal will remain online until we are ready to move users to the new Plaxo Calendar (sometime this year). All of the features you’ve come to love on HipCal will remain free on the Plaxo offering.

What does this mean for the HipCal team?
We are now proudly Plaxo employees (including the hippo)! We’ll be starting our cross-country road trip out to Mountain View, California in early June and we’ll be blogging along the way. We’d like to thank everyone thats posted in the forums and been supportive of the site and us during our busy college schedules. Hopefully we’ve made everyone a little more organized.

Thanks,
Chris, Garret, Glenn, Pete, and Tawheed

Surprise Update

Here are some of the goodies we just released:

  • You can now publish your calendar via iCal.
  • Alerts contain much more detailed information.
  • Ability to delete categories!
  • Performance improvements (We know the site gets a bit slow at times, these fixes should help improve the speed).

That’s just about all we have as far as new features go, stay tuned for our big update.

Wait, we still have a blog?

HipCal won best Student website at the SXSW Web Awards! Thanks to all of you who voted!

We know there haven’t been many updates lately, but big things are happening over here at HipCal. As a result we will be able to support a significantly larger user base as well as provide powerful synchronization features. Don’t expect many new features soon because these changes take up most of our time. As always we will be checking the forum and fixing bugs. Thanks!

We’re happy to announce that we’ll be moving to a new server tonight (for us EST folks). This shouldn’t result in very much downtime if all goes well, and the site should be much faster afterwards. We ask that you bear with us over the next few days as we tweak the new server and tend to the bugs in the forum that we’ve been neglecting.

Thanks again for your support and dealing with the horrible site performance over the past month. We know it’s been rough.
